Thread Carefully: How Sewing Untangled My Brain

R Aulia

Remember how everyone went wild for sourdough at the start of the pandemic? Baking bread seemed to unlock some hidden skill in folks who'd never ventured past instant noodles. Well, I was a bit of a late bloomer that way. Instead of bread, I got obsessed with sewing. It all started in 2022 when I finally took the plunge and bought myself a sewing machine.

Cut to a few months later, and while I won't be stocking retail stores with the bag I made anytime soon, I have accidentally stumbled upon something far more valuable than a perfectly finished garment. It turns out that sewing has some seriously unexpected mental benefits.

Sewing: The Ultimate Mindfulness Practice

If the word "mindfulness" makes you think of incense and chanting, let me introduce you to my version: threading needles and wrestling with seam rippers. Sewing forces you to focus like nothing else. Guiding fabric under the needle, keeping the pedal speed steady, making sure your fingers don't turn into accidental pincushions – it all demands your full attention. Suddenly, those unread emails and looming deadlines melt away, replaced by the simple act of creation. My sewing space has become an accidental spa for my brain, and that's a plot twist I hadn't expected.

A Masterclass in Patience (Whether You Like it or Not)

Let's be real: sewing is not for the faint of heart. Between miscalculating the fabric, tangled threads, and that time I sewed two sleeves together (how is that even possible?), there have been moments when I've been tempted to toss my sewing machine out the window. But the funny thing is, the more mistakes I make (and there are a lot), the more patient I become. That satisfying feeling when you finally troubleshoot a wonky seam or master a tricky technique is worth all the frustration. Sewing has become a reminder that sometimes the best things in life require a bit of perseverance.

Sew What? You Mean I Have to Plan This Thing?

As someone who thrives on creative chaos, the idea of following instructions is usually…unappealing. But sewing has made me the queen of begrudging organization. Each project demands planning: planning the pattern (no matter how much I want to skip to the fun part), carefully cutting the pieces, and actually attempting to sew these pieces together. Turns out, sewing is like a sneaky logic puzzle disguised as a craft. Suddenly, I find myself applying those strategic thinking skills to other areas of my life. Who knew making a tote bag could be such a satisfying puzzle to work on?

Don't worry, I have zero delusions about becoming a sewing master. And let's face it, some of my early creations should probably stay far away from any cameras. But the unexpected joy of sewing, and the way it stretches my mind in a thousand different directions – that's absolutely something I want to share. So, even if you think you have the crafting skills of a clumsy panda, I urge you to give sewing a try. It might just surprise you. You won’t be alone on this unexpectedly rewarding journey!
